Growing An Edible, Sustainable 'Yard' ( Part 1

"Fruits of our labor"

 Introduction

A little over a year ago, my wife and I decided that we would landscape our front yard.  We are currently renting the property, but hope to own one day.  The yard was barren and was comprised of crab grass, pebbles, and completely diminished soil (we call "sand-dust").  This is part one of our journey into organic, edible gardening.   We did our best along the way to take pictures and did our research of just about everything we planted to ensure the proper "fit" while keeping the aesthetics in check for our patient and understanding neighbors (we hoped).  We hadn't seen many people take the aesthetic approach with veggies so we thought we'd give it a whirl.

Realization of Inherent Hardships

At first, we thought growing our own food would be an easy undertaking.  We quickly realized that planning the garden would be a huge challenge in and of itself.  We had read a few books on the subjects of permaculture, sustainable living, companion planting, and vegetable gardening, but it took much longer than expected to develop a feasible plan to achieve our goals.  Ultimately, we would like to live "sustainably" and begin living without fear of consuming nutritious foods and whether or not we

would get some sort of disease from our grocer
because they sprayed their crops with Agent Orange or decided that genetically modifying their crops to have pesticides built in (creepy).  We will, however, like to note that we do not give in to the whole sensationalists approach to organic gardening.  By that, I mean we tend to not worry
about the world's alleged, "impending doom".  We were warned thousands of years ago of this (please see: Bible).  In future revisions to this article, we will explain more deeply our beliefs and the steps we took towards more sustainable living as both took a huge part in the process of starting our sustainable, organic addiction.  ;)
