Scrub GPS Data From Your Digital Photos

(source: popscy.com)
  In recent news, John McAfee, was accused of killing a neighbor of his.  Claiming innocence and fear that authorities in Belize would attempt to extort him for money and "shake him down" in a manner that may be violent.  Just a couple of days ago, he was apprehended and extradited to the United States (current en route).

  Did you know how he was caught?  A reporter accidentally posted a photo of him with embedded EXIF (Exchangeable Image file Format) data.  EXIF is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and ancillary tags used by digital cameras (including smartphones), scanners and other systems handling image and sound files recorded by digital cameras; (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exchangeable_image_file_format)  Originally, I read an article posted by Popular Science that mentioned a couple of tools to pull the data from digital photos, but I soon found another tutorial utilizing the Linux CLI (much better) that I'd recommend my smart readers read :) ->  http://hacktux.com/read/remove/exif

  The article was written with RedHat users in mind, but the tools used can be found very easily for other distributions or built from source as well.

Growing An Edible, Sustainable 'Yard' ( Part 2 )

Where Do We Begin?

(heirloom sweet corn seedlings)
My wife and I decided that we were going to do this right.  We had a portion of our last tax return saved and calculated as investment towards our garden.  This wasn't much, but it was around $800.  This was what we thought to be an obvious over-estimate, but we wanted to make sure we didn't run out of money and lose the entire investment by means of not being able to afford replacing tools, adding nutrition to the soil, etc.  We figured this would be enough to get the ball rolling and buy whatever it is we would need to reach our first year's goal.

What Are Our Goals Again?

(ABOVE: Otters in our creek!; BELOW: Duckweed under cypress trees!)
Before going out an buying a bunch of plants, seeds, and tools, we thought it a good idea to create a design plan first.  My wife spent many times over the course of a couple of months going outside at different times of the day checking what parts of the yard received at least some form of shade.  Meanwhile, I would spend the nights doing the same.  In addition she would take note of wind directions and water flow when it rained hard enough to puddle up.  This also makes me recall us learning about what parts of our yard puddled more than others.  The concept of "learning the land" became an addiction very quickly for the both of us.  We enjoyed observing the natural function of our own mini ecosystem.  We started looking up birds in the area and thinking of birds we'd like to see come around, we noticed an abundance of squirrels that we didn't think much about, but we soon learned that they were cute pests.  Not only were we paying attention to our own property, but soon we developed an interest in our neighbors' property, the city properties and local parks.  We discovered where the water goes during heavy, flooding rains by utilizing Google Maps and following the spillways clear across the city.  We had no idea our little creak was directly responsible for draining millions if not billions of gallons of water off central Saint Petersburg streets!  Cool!  The wife and I spent (and still do) many hours enjoying the "hidden" beauty of our city that we seemed to have missed for our entire lives.  There were vast mini and micro ecosystems working together you just have to stop an look around every once and a while. Other than "land-learning" we had a very big problem with our soil at home.  It was a silty dust, barely drained and blew down the street if someone sneezed.  We will talk more about our soil preparations in part three.  For now, enjoy observing and researching your habitat!

"Fruits of our labor"

 Introduction

  A little over a year ago, my wife and I decided that we would landscape our front yard.  We are currently renting the property, but hope to own one day.  The yard was barren and was comprised of crab grass, pebbles, and completely diminished soil (we call "sand-dust").  This is part one of our journey into organic, edible gardening.   We did our best along the way to take pictures and did our research of just about everything we planted to ensure the proper "fit" while keeping the aesthetics in check for our patient and understanding neighbors (we hoped).  We hadn't seen many people take the aesthetic approach with veggies so we thought we'd give it a whirl.

"Sand-Dust"
"Sand-Dust"

Realization of Inherent Hardships

  At first, we thought growing our own food would be an easy undertaking.  We quickly realized that planning the garden would be a huge challenge in and of itself.  We had read a few books on the subjects of permaculture, sustainable living, companion planting, and vegetable gardening, but it took much longer than expected to develop a feasible plan to achieve our goals.  Ultimately, we would like to live "sustainably" and begin living without fear of consuming nutritious foods and whether or not we
(source: OccupyFarmAnimals)
would get some sort of disease from our grocer
because they sprayed their crops with Agent Orange or decided that genetically modifying their crops to have pesticides built in (creepy).  We will, however, like to note that we do not give in to the whole sensationalists approach to organic gardening.  By that, I mean we tend to not worry
about the world's alleged, "impending doom".  We were warned thousands of years ago of this (please see: Bible).  In future revisions to this article, we will explain more deeply our beliefs and the steps we took towards more sustainable living as both took a huge part in the process of starting our sustainable, organic addiction.  ;)

SSH/SFTP Filesystem; Aw Snap!

SSHFS - SSH/SFTP Filesystem

  SSHFS is most simply identified as an SSH filesystem supported by the default SSH client file transfer protocol.  In fact, this filesystem is so easy to set up, you can do it on the fly without any setup on the server side and the only muck up to you on the client side is almost as simply as logging in via SSH and mounting the filesystem.  This is largely based on LUFS (Linux User-land FileSystem), but further extended in functionality.

SSHFS Installation

  First and foremost, you will need FUSE2.2 or higher (http://fuse.sourceforge.net/) and glib2.0 which can be found in most popular Linux distribution repositories already.  After you have satisfied the dependencies, you can compile as you normally would:
  $ ./configure
  $ make
  # make install

Get started!

  It's very simple to get started, actually, simply:
  $ sshfs username@hostname:mountpoint   # Note: Do NOT use root user!!
  $ fusermount -u mountpoint                      # Umount temporary filesystem

UEFI & Linux (UPDATED)

What is EFI/UEFI?

  UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is the new boot and runtime service provider that claims to "...provide a clean interface between operating systems and platform firmware at boot time, and will support an architecture-independent mechanism for initializing add-in cards..." (as per the UEFI.org website).  UEFI is simply the EFI specification with Intel modifications in the form of re-factoring. The UEFI specification is similar to BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) in that it provides boot/runtime services, but is architecture independent (ie: not reliant on the x86 architecture).  I must mention that UEFI is not a replacement of BIOS as some firmware requires the use of BIOS functions (eg: POST (Power-On Self-Test) and Setup).  One final note should be that EFI/UEFI does not improve or degrade the security of the system it is on.

"Secure Boot" and the PK

  As stated previously, EFI/UEFI does not improve or degrade system security.  It does, however, include alleged "security enhancements" to protect the pre-OS environment from "unknown OS loaders" (please see: MSN Blog Archive).  This particular blog goes on to say, "...secure boot doesn't "lock out" operating system loaders, but is a policy that allows firmware to validate authenticity of components...". The problem with this is in the event you purchase a new machine with UEFI and it does not have the option in BIOS to disable secure boot. By design it is supposed to sign executables like drivers with a KEK (Key Exchange Key; similar to a public key) and provide an additional layer of security, which actually sounds good to me, honestly.  My biggest qualm with this methodology is the fact that, once the firmware is out of "setup" mode (no PK installed) and enters "user" mode (gets assigned a signed key) it is "locked down" to the signer of the keys (in my case Microsoft or the UEFI organization).

My Run-In with Secure Boot

  I have recently purchased a new Lenovo V570 series laptop from Best Buy. The specifications looked great for the price and the machine had and aesthetic allure as well. The brushed, dark aluminum, the slim and light-weight design. It certainly appealed to my eyes as well as my wallet proportionately with the specs therein. My wife probably thinks I'm having an affair with the thing, so I'll stop talking about how great it is and get to the part where I say that I also hate it.

  Before purchasing the laptop, I had not heard of EFI/UEFI. Nor, had I heard of GPT (GUID Partition Table). I spent quite a bit of time researching these acronyms and discovering something that had been around from some time now and wondered exactly how I never heard of it! I spent quite a few hours attempting to install Linux distributions and different bootloaders (including GRUB-EFI, SYSLINUX, LILO, etc) all claiming to work with EFI/UEFI.

  I finally [accidentally] discovered that I could in fact boot, but only from a Live DVD and selecting the "Boot from first HDD" option. What the heck!? Pressing F12 at POST on my machine and selecting "Boot From Hard Disk" was effectively the same thing, but it failed and went on to try booting removable media before moving on to a PXE boot. I was perturbed at this point to say the least.

Epiphany

  I decided to live handicapped and continue booting off my distribution's live DVD because I needed my machine for work. When I had time, I'd try finding information that would help me actually boot my machine without the crutch, to no avail. Finally, I found a couple of articles online that aided in my toils, but [still yet] offered no solution.  The first of which was a random blog I found by means of Google ("UEFI and 'Secure Boot'").  I really suggest reading that post as it really cleared the air for me.  Unfortunately, it also burst my bubble when he wrote about GPLv3, GRUB2, and the presumption that Secure Boot and be turned off in BIOS setup.  The big problem here for me is the fact that there is NO OPTION TO DISABLE Secure Boot on my machine.  This deeply saddens me and I want to strangle Lenovo for this.  Very disappointing.

Ephesians 4
King James 2000 Bible

Walk in Unity of One Body
1I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation by which you are called,
2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
3Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling;
5One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
Use Spiritual Gifts for the Body
7But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8Therefore he says, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9(Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
11And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:
14That we from now on be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive;
15But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, who is the head, even Christ:
16From whom the whole body being fitly joined together and knit together by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, makes increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
Walk in Christ as a New Man
17This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you no longer walk as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,
18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
19Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto licentiousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20But you have not so learned Christ;
21If so be that you have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus:
22That you put off concerning the former way of life the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24And that you put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
25Therefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.
26Be angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:
27Neither give place to the devil.
28Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needs.
29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
30And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, by whom you are sealed unto the day of redemption.
31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
32And be you kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you.

Hebrews 12

God Disciplines His Sons
1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
4In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”
7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
12Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13“Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed.
Warning Against Refusing God
14Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. 15See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. 16See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. He could bring about no change of mind, though he sought the blessing with tears.
18You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; 19to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, 20because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.” 21The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”
22But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, 24to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.
25See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven?26At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain.
28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29for our “God is a consuming fire.”

Mark 11

1As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
4They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, 5some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna!a
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”b
10“Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest!”
11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.
12The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written:
“‘My house will be called
a house of prayer for all nations’c?
But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’d
18The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.
19When evening came, theye went out of the city.
20In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22“Havef faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23“I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.g
27They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28“By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”
29Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!”
31They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32But if we say, ‘From men’…” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
33So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”
Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

Matthew 6

1“Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

5“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9“This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10your kingdom come,
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11Give us today our daily bread.
12Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.a’
14For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

16“When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

19“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

25“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifeb?

28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

1Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.
2And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
3And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken.
4The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.
5The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.
6For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
7The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.
8But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.
9Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear unto my speech.
10Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.
11Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins.
12They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.
13Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:
14Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;
15Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.
16Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.
17And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
18And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;
19When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.
20Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters, that send forth thither the feet of the ox and the ass.
